Cautious in Quarantine: I tried the Zoo

By Kate Sparrow, Publisher, Macaroni Kid Pensacola July 2, 2020

You guys know I have been super cautious during times of COVID-19. My husband is an essential worker, so I'm aware that my family is exposed and could potentially be able to continue the spread.

All that said, I LOVE the Gulf Breeze Zoo, and their signage about following all CDC recommendations really got me. We went last month, before cases really started to rise again, and honestly, I had mixed feelings about being there. It was AMAZING to be out and walking around. The crowds were heavy, but not overwhelming. Some people took the Zoo's reminders to stay 6 feet apart very seriously while others seemed to not notice at all! We wore masks, but it felt like a million degrees and no one else was wearing them, so honestly, I gave up wearing mine halfway through our visit.

Most of the hand sanitizing stations had plenty of hand sanitizer, but a few were out, so I'd be sure to bring some of your own! I thought that the entrance policies may have changed due to current circumstances, but (when we were there at least) you still have to enter through the (closed door) gift shop. There were no markings on the floor to encourage people to stay six feet away, and the exchange was in no way contactless. The staff were wearing masks, but they weren't behind any kind of plastic barrier or anything, so you'll have to be extra careful while checking in.

We still had a great day and were so happy to see most of our favorite animals, but we did not ride the train given the crowd size. I'd be willing to try again when things calm down a bit!

Stay safe everyone!
